Stigma & Discrimination at Work
Booster
Having a conversation about mental health is the best way to start breaking down stigma in the workplace. Combating stigma against people living with a mental illness or a substance use problem can start with the language we use. What you say and how you say it really make a difference. Talking about mental health is no different than talking about any other concern. You can talk to someone with a mental illness or problem the same way you would if it were a physical illness.
In this section we’ll look at how using first-person language can help reduce stigma and then we’ll review ways you can communicate with your colleagues to show empathy and respect.
What you say and how you say it really make a difference. Our language reflects our beliefs and the way we view people. We may be unaware of the impact that the words we choose can have on our own attitude and how they affect people around us. The words we choose can convey belief in, and a genuine respect for someone or they can do the opposite.
People living with mental health or substance use problems are put down, discouraged, demoralized, and marginalized. By choosing our words carefully, we can fight stigma. An illness or a diagnosis does not define who we are. We are people first and foremost.
